The most brilliant science in the world is worthless if no one else knows about it or understands it. Thus, the goal of a scientific writing is to clearly communicate what the researcher has done, what they found and why it is important and interesting. [Val Gerard]
A dissertation may be analyzed into three S’s: Structure, Substance and Style. Structure confers logical coherence; Substance, significance and depth; and Style, elegance and appeal. [R Chandrasekhar; 30 April 2002]
The main steps involved in the dissertation writing are:
- Choosing the topic (Based on the facilities and resources a researcher has) [4]
- Collection of primary data (Descriptive methods of analysis i.e. the protocols used in thesis which are compiled after extensive research) [4]
- Collection of secondary data (Such as textbooks, journal articles, websites)
- Introduction to thesis (Orient the reader to the content of the thesis, summarize the main points of the thesis and finally a executive summary at the end) [3]
- Data analysis (Start by analyzing, organizing (with tables and figures) interpreting data obtained from both wet lab and dry lab experiments, this will clarify the focus of the thesis or dissertations) [4]
- Discussions (Start with implications of the findings then open to broader implications and finally justify the interpretations) [3]
- Conclusion (These are the interpretations drawn from the experiments and results, based on the findings, what are the recommendations, what are the gap that still exist and where should this topic go from here) [3]
- References (Which gives an insight from where the data supporting the research has been collected)
It’s important to note that the content of the dissertation or thesis must be written with a critical eye. Rather than implying the content must be negative, the author must simply adopt a questioning approach and attempt to explain the findings of the research. Thesis must be able to clearly demonstrate the validity of their argument and interpret, demonstrate and explain it as thoroughly as possible. [4]
To conclude I would like to add that dissertations writing in biotechnology would involve taking insight about the research project of the individual, which can be done by corresponding with the researcher.
